She was recruited by the KGB and followed the U.S.S.R.'s "Black Widow Ops" program since her very early childhood. Ivan Petrovitch takes her to Department X together with other young female orphans, where she was brainwashed, and trained in combat and espionage at the covert "Red Room" facility. She got also education in indoctrination, in order to prepare her for a life as spy. She excelled in this strict training environment and soon became regarded as master spy and one of the world's greatest assassins. She is biotechnologically and psycho-technologically enhanced, which provides a rationale for her unusually long and youthful lifespan. She was sterilized at the final ceremony to complete her training, with the purpose to avoid any distractions and focus solely on her missions, something what she later deeply regretted in her life. She earned the code name Black Widow later due her ruthless effectiveness. 

Each Black Widow is deployed with false memories to help ensure that she shows her loyalty. The KGB arranges that she marries to renowned Soviet test pilot Alexei Shostakov. He hears that he can have no further contact with his wife because the Soviet government decides that Alexei becomes their new operative with the name Red Guardian. He's trained separately as secret agent and Natasha is told that died during duty.

She's not only KGB agent but also became member of S.H.I.E.L.D. (international counter-intelligence agency) later. Black Widow was one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most talented agent, with an extensive  mastery in martial arts and is armed with her Widow's Bite. She joined the Avengers and helped  them to defend New York City, after Loki declared war to earth. She continued her work for S.H.I.E.L.D. after Loki is defeated by the avengers. She worked with fellow agent Captain America in that time and her mission to infiltrate in the HYDRA organisation fails, which results that all her morally dubious history is being revealed to the world. She rejoins the Avengers, with the assignment to defeat various HYDRA cells across the world and the rogue artificial intelligence Ultron.

• Master Spy: She is highly skilled in espionage, stealth, disguise, infiltration and demolitions. Her talents and years of experience enables her to reach a high rank as special agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. She tries to seduce men to obtain her goals while working undercover.
• Master Martial Artist: She's mastered martial arts as karate, judo, aikido, savate, boxing, lucha-libre style wrestling and multiple styles of kung fu.
• Master Acrobat: She uses gymnastics and acrobatics into her fighting style.
• Master Assassin: She's very skilled in the art of assassination and is considered to be one of the most dangerous assassins in the world. She has killed many people during her time serving for the KGB and S.H.I.E.L.D..
